Mory Kanté Achievements Instruments History of the Griots
1976
Mory Kanté was awarded the Voix d’Or ('Golden Voice') trophy in Nigeria.
1985
Mory Kanté participated in the Tam Tam For Ethiopia project (organised by Manu Dibango) in Paris, alongside thirty other African artists.
1986
The album 10 Kola Nuts was hailed by the critics and nominated for the French Victoires De La Musique.
1988
Yéké Yéké was number one on the Pan-European charts in Billboard magazine (USA). After it had been re-recorded for the album Akwaba Beach, sales soared to more than a million singles and half a million albums.
1990

Mory Kanté represented France alongside Khaled on 14 July, French Bastille Day in Central Park in front of tens of thousands of New Yorkers.

The album Touma (The Moment) achieved gold status in France.

1991
Mory Kanté presented his Symphony of Guinea, interpreted by one hundred and thirty griot musicians (both male and female), for the inaugural ceremony for the Grande Arche De La Défence in Paris.
1994

Mory Kanté was awarded the Griot d’Or in Paris.

He was also awarded the Prix Kilimandjaro by Africa No.1 (the ‘number one’ Franco-African radio station in France).

1998
Canal France International chose the title song from Tatebola, for the signature tune for the Mundial 1998.
2000

A remix of ‘Yéké Yéké’ was included in the Hollywood film The Beach, staring Leonardo Di Caprio.

In December, Mory Kanté was invited to the Vatican to participate in the festivities of the Pope’s jubilee

2001

On 16 October, World Food Day, Mory Kanté was appointed F.A.O. (Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations) Ambassador. This program was initiated in 1999 with the main purpose of attracting public and media attention to the fact that almost 800 million people are suffering from chronic hunger and malnutrition. Each F.A.O. Ambassador has made a personal and professional commitment to this situation. In June 2002, Mory attended the World Food Summit: Five Years Later and spoke extensively about his role as an ambassador during a press conference. In July 2003, Mory dedicated a concert to F.A.O. at the Imatra Festival in Finland. Mory also performed in the first ever TELEFOOD festival in Johannesburg, South Africa and participated as the narrator in a special TV show about the Ambassador program that was broadcast in over 188 countries.

The album Tamala (Le Voyaguer) was number one in the World Music Charts of Europe for October and November.

In November, Mory Kanté was awarded the Pan African Broadcast Heritage & Achievement Awards (PABHA) for ‘Best Male Performer’ award.

2003
Mory Kanté was invited to perform in Robin Island prison, South Africa in commemoration of the years that Nelson Mandela had spent incarcerated there.
